Glossary keyword - Title Tag

Title Tag

A title tag is a list of text in the HTML of a web page that states the title of the page.  The title tag of your website should be concise, human, and machine-readable and accurately describe the contents of your page. This is because they are clickable headlines displayed in search results. Usually after a web user performs a search. For the sake of “clickability,” the structure of your title tag is essential for SEO, social sharing, and usability.  A quick search of your web address in Google’s search engine should give you a good idea of how the title tag looks on the search engine results page (SERP).

Optimal length and format

Search engine optimization experts recommend that the optimal format of the title tag should be; Main Keyword – Related Keyword |Brand Name. For example, a good title tag for a ladies shoe store called Faggos would be; Ladies Shoes – Ladies Footwear | Faggos.com. The length of your title tag is critical for click-through-rate. This is mainly because most search engines would only display a limited number of characters. Usually, Google shows only the first 50 – 60 characters of your title tag. Therefore a very compelling title tag would be preferably below 60 characters. According to research by Moz, 90% of titles within this range display properly on SERPs.

Importance of the Title Tag

Title tags are the first impression your target audience has of you, your website, and business. Also, they play a crucial role in assisting spiders and search bots to understand what your website is all about. These two uses are applied most in three critical places. Firstly, they are useful in social networks. Secondly, they appear on search engine results pages. Lastly, they are also useful in web browsers (on the top of your open tab).
